De Young Properties’ EnVision project leveraged California Advanced Homes Program incentives to offset the additional costs of building a zero-energy community. The project incorporated smart technologies including cutting-edge home automation and monitoring, which helped homes achieve modeled energy savings of 28 percent lower than homes built to current building code.
De Young implemented advanced energy saving measures in virtually every aspect of design. These smart homes feature advanced wall framing, a high-performance attic, and energy efficient windows, which together provide a very well-insulated home. In addition to the highly efficient envelope, the project team avoided traditional gas heating, air conditioning, and hot water equipment by installing electric heat pumps. Last, the project’s homes feature ENERGY STAR® appliances, providing homeowners with even more efficiency and energy savings.
